Matchup plan

Take flat mana regen runes to compensate for the nerfed blue buff. Blues: scaling AP. Reds: ignite damage. Utility: mana regen and blue buff duration. Quints: flat AP for early damage. Start with Catalyst of Aeons for sustain, then rush Rod of Ages. Build order is flexible; Sorcerer's Shoes can be built early. Later, need Rabadon's Deathcap, Void Staff, and Will of the Ancients for damage and sustain. Do not build Athene's Unholy Grail, as mana regen is less important than max mana.

How a strong Ryze player plays

  1. 1

    W Root into Combo

Ryze will root you with W, then follow up with EQ combo to poke while you are CC'd.

  2. 2

    E Spread Poke

Ryze uses E to bounce off minions to poke you and push the wave, making it hard for you to last hit.

  3. 3

    R Roam

After pushing the wave, Ryze uses R to quickly roam to side lanes, creating number advantages.
