Summoner spells: Take Ignite instead of Ghost. When Darius gets close, Garen is dead. Ignite provides true damage that ignores Garen's W damage reduction, and since Garen typically builds no health, Ignite is more effective. First item: Stridebreaker. Second item: Sterak's Gage. Garen's R deals damage based on missing health, which is completely countered by Sterak's shield. Early on, build a Ruby Crystal for extra survivability.

How a strong Garen player plays

    Q Silence Trade

    Garen will start with Q to silence you, then spin with E. Retreat before the silence ends to deny counterplay.

  2. 2

    Full E Spin Poke

    He takes Phase Rush. When trading, he will spin full E, then auto Q to proc Phase Rush and quickly disengage. Don't chase.

  3. 3

    Bait E Then Counter

    He will wait for you to use E, then use Q to speed up and silence, then E for a combo. Save your E.
